Squirrels

squirrels play
squirrels red
or grey

squirrels chase
branch to branch
they race

squirrels eat
nibble quick
and neat

squirrels pause
freeze with nuts
in jaws

squirrels dig
squirrels’ brains
aren’t big

but they remember
nuts from last
September

squirrels scratch
fleas are hard
to catch

when you’re fleasy
life is not
that easy

squirrels’ tails
billowing
like sails

squirrels’ eyes
never show
surprise

squirrels stop
look at you
then hop

to a tree
squirrels wait
and see

squirrels natter
squirrels
chitter-chatter

sensing danger
pointing at
a stranger

squirrels hurry
squirrels
scamper-scurry

to their dray
till you go
away

when it freezes,
when it
icy-breezes,

squirrels sleep
snuggle
several deep

not hibernation –
winter
relaxation

squirrels snore
just a little
more

then creep outdoors
use their
winter stores

in the Spring
squirrel spirits
sing

turn from creepers
back to treetop
leapers

in their millions
in their squirrel
squillions

they are brilliant
squirrels are just
squilliant!
